Today's Thoughts...

So far today's going pretty well. No nightmares last night (I had the phone ready and waiting by my bed in case I needed it...). I woke up feeling fairly rested. I managed to get out there today for a nice little run...it's a glorious day out there.

I got to do a lot of thinking, which is something that I desperately needed.

I thought about running. I decided to commit myself to running the half marathon this coming May. Having a definite goal is good for me to keep me on track with running. I need to run to stay sane...and I'm not always that great at doing it as often as I should...so hopefully having the Bluenose Marathon looming in my face will be just the inspiration that I need. It'll be my 35th birthday present to myself.

Wow....did I really say 35? Holy shit.

In other news...I did some more processing while I was out...about me and my life over the last year and a half or so. Specifically the impact of the death of a certain family member, and how that seemed to be the catalyst for where I've ended up in my life right now. It's interesting...I expected it to be a big deal when it happened, but at the time I couldn't see it. I guess I expected a huge epiphany right in the moment, but rather it took a long time to unfold ...and it's only now that much of it is making sense to me.

The good news is...it's all good. I'm figuring it out, I'm making sense of it all. Even better is that I'm actively making changes that reflect these realizations. In the past I used to believe that just making the realization was enough...but now I know that there's more required...I need to actually change based on those epiphanies...even if the changes are just in my own thought process, beliefs or attitudes.

I'm moving forward.

New beginnings....better memories....better life....better Mama S.

Three in a Row

I've gotten out running three mornings in a row so far this week. That's officially a record for me! The past few months I've been rebelling a bit, only doing what I felt like doing, or not doing, even if that meant avoiding those things that are good for me. My runs have been sporadic, at best. So to have gotten out three mornings in a row, even though the runs have been short ones, feels good. It's good to know that I've gotten out there purely by my own motivation, entirely on my own mental, emotional, and physical energy. There only one pushing to get me out there is me...and that feels mighty good to someone who relies far too heavily on the motivation, encouragement, and pride of others.

I did it...and I did it for me. It feels better than I thought it would.

My body, mind and spirit have definitely been thanking me for getting back into the swing of things. It's good to be back, baby. Bluenose Marathon 2009 here I come!

No Miracle Today

Well, I didn't get my miracle. :(

I am still sick; sick enough to not be able to run today.

On the bright side, I am still well enough to have friends over to party anyhow. The "Almost Marathon" party. Ah well. Sometimes the universe has other plans for us.

This is a good reminder that I need to simply celebrate life, and not necessarily my accomplishments in life.

Bring on the beer!

Wellness Update

The cold continues.

After the 3 1/2 hour nap yesterday afternoon, I went to bed at only slightly later than my regular bedtime. I slept another full 8 hours last night.

This morning I had plans to make it to the farmer's market and do our usual library visit. I managed a shower and to get dressed, but about 10 minutes before my departure time, my body gave up on me. I stayed home and napped for 3 hours while Chris took the girls out.

This afternoon I am feeling slightly perkier but I've given up hope on tomorrow's marathon. If I had another full day to recover - MAYBE I would be able to manage it, but as things stand now, I'm just not going to be able to summon up the energy.

I'm trying hard to accept that this is just the way things are. Maybe there's a lesson to be seen in this, who knows. Or maybe the universe just plain hates me.

All I do know at this point is that I need to get out and get myself some cough drops before bedtime tonight.

Oh No

My immune system has officially crapped out on me, I believe. I guess it was only a matter of time before all these months of stress and upset finally took it's toll on my physical self, since my mental, emotional and spiritual sides have been taking a serious beating.

Yesterday I developed a sore throat. Today my energy levels are incredibly low. I napped for - get this - 3 1/2 hours this afternoon while Chris amused the girls.

(Yes, yes I am glad that my husband is a full time student, allowing me the luxury of all afternoon naps when I'm feeling sick).

I picked up my race kit this morning for Sunday's half-marathon, but unless God grants me a miracle of healing, I don't see how I'm going to be able to run.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, really. In some ways it's a bit of a relief to not have the pressure of running the half, but in other ways it's hard not to feel like this is just another item to add to the list of "things I've failed at".

Who knows, maybe I'll be granted that miracle after all....

...but at this point I'm not holding my breath.

Finally! A Post About Running

So yeah, I haven't been posting very much about running lately. The reason for this is that I haven't really been running all that much these past several months...certainly not as much in comparison with last year. This time last year, I was marathon-ready, and chomping at the bit to get out there and run the 42-k. This year, life got in the way and sadly, I simply wasn't able to train the way I needed to.

So I won't be running the full marathon this year.

I have decided, however, that I am going to do the half marathon. I've been wavering even on this point; it feels a bit like a failure in some ways, compared to last year. But when I look at it logically, I can see that with the limited time, opportunity, and motivation that I've had since January or so, the fact that I'm going to run 21-k should be something to be proud of. So I'm working hard on not comparing myself this year to myself last year, and simply focus on the fact that I'm doing the best that I can, right now, with the circumstances that arose.

It's not easy, it's definitely taking effort, but it's a good goal to work toward - the acceptance, not the 21-k. The acceptance and self-love part is a way bigger challenge.

9 days to go.
